Infant Baptisms

  • Call or email one of the priests or deacons at Newman and set up a meeting to discuss the baptism of your child and set a date.   Baptisms can be held at anytime that is agreeable between you and the priest or deacon performing the ceremony.
  • For parents of first born infants a session will need to be arranged to discuss the theology of baptism and the logistics of the baptismal ceremony.
  • Godparents should be chosen with care.  They should be people who will have a relationship with the child and help the parents with the spiritual growth of the child.  At least one Godparent must be a fully initiated (i.e. has received baptism, confirmation and eucharist) and a practicing Catholic.  A person from another Christian denomination can serve as a Christian witness.
  • There is no specific fee, however a donation to the Newman Catholic Center is encouraged.

Baptism of Older Children

  • Children who have reached the age of reason, generally accepted as seven (7) years of age, will be enrolled in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) and prepared to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and possibly Confirmation.
  • Sponsors and catechists will help these young people learn about God and His Church in an age appropriate way.
  • Children will participate in various rites of the RCIC that are celebrated during the year.
  • This process will ordinarily take one year of participation.  However, this is flexible, depending on circumstances.
  • These children will celebrate the sacraments at the Easter Vigil
  • Godparents have the same criteria as above
  • Children baptized in other Christian traditions are prepared for Confirmation and Eucharist.  They make a Profession of Faith in the Catholic Church.

Baptism of Adults

  • The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the customary way that people become members of the Roman Catholic faith.
  • Please refer to the Becoming Catholic page of the Newman website for more specific information.
